I broke the glass turntable for my microwave oven; do I need to replace it?; can I operate the oven without it?
You definitely need to replace the glass turntable, and you should NEVER operate the microwave oven without it. The turntable improves the heating uniformity of your food; however, it has a second major function: it is a protective device that prevent too much microwave energy being reflected back to the magnetron (the tube that generates the microwaves). Also, a fire in the oven is possible.
Is it dangerous to stand in front of an operating microwave oven?
No, unless the door has been severely damaged; even in that case, injury is extremely unlikely. Generally, the amount of energy that might leak from the microwave is about equal to the energy form a small Christmas tree bulb. Also, microwave energy is extremely weak and can only heat things; not like X-Rays that can cause cancer.
